MP3 Player for Leapster Devices:

Unfortunately the Leapster screen size just doesn't have space for playlist AND cover art and simply scaling the MP3 Player for LeapPad produced ugly results with unreadable tiny fonts, so I started from scratch (dewplayer-playlist-cover.swf) and skinned it in the style of Winamp.

All of the on-screen buttons work as expected, the volume slider can be used for fine volume adjustments if used alongside the Leapster's built in volume controls, future potential to remap (L - Prev track, R - Next Track, etc..), Unfortunately the Leapster doesn't recognize the home button while running custom apps, simply power off to reboot the device (Will add exit button...)

Differences in the Leapster version:

Screen resolution (320x240px/6400x4800twips)
Lack of Cover Art display area (shown offscreen, not removed)
Lack of Playlist info display area (shown offscreen, not removed)
No ID3 Tags/hidden Track info (This looks like a Leapster issue, as the function for reading ID3 Tags works on LeapPad 3)

Introducing LeapPad Photo Slide, a simple application that's function is tragically overlooked by the official LeapPad software.

Now your LeapPad can easily double up as a digital photo frame and showcase your child's photographic masterpieces, simply install the App Package via LeapPad Manager and upon launching, Photo Slide will begin cycling through the first 20 photos on the device. (/LF/Bulk/Data/Local/All/Photos/)

Inside the App Package, there is a file named 'Photos.xml' this file contains each photo entry (Currently 20 entries) and the respective filenames, if the Photos.xml has more entries than there are photos on your device, a blank screen will be shown after the last photo is shown. (I'm working on it)

The very first Photo Entry in Photos.xml contains a tag,

This dictates the amount of time each photo is shown for in seconds and is set to 15 by default.

You will still need to Toggle Main_App[on] to prevent the LeapPad from sleeping, you can do this in LeapPad Manager > Developer Tools.

NOTE: If the LeapPad gets switched off, it will not boot normally with Main_App[on], connect via USB and toggle Main_App[off].

You COULD in theory create a symlink to '/LF/Bulk/ProgramFiles/DEAK-0x90000000/loader.swf' and use FTP to place it in /Flags/Main_App, then your LeapPad will boot straight into Photo Slide (Until you delete the /Flags/Main_App again)

If you have a USB -> Serial converter and want to mess around with a device, let me know. I have a bunch of Leap Pad 2's that either have no touch screen or a broken one that I can send you. You can still see the screen, you just won't be able to touch to move around the screen. I only ask that you cover shipping which would be about $7 for priority mail in the USA.

I would like to get more people involved so I am willing to send these out for free. I have been fixing screens on these for a while and just have too much extra inventory since I have burned myself out on these and just want to clear some out.

Please be aware that once you go into dev mode, if you can't get connected to the device, you might be stuck in dev mode. You can try installing my Dev mode app so you can use that to toggle between dev mode and not directly on the device. http://spiffyhacks.harmonypogo.com/thread-16.html

1. You will need to either get shell access to the device or use the LeapPad Manager app with a version of at least 7.2.1 which can be found HERE. If you go with shell access, you can run the command "touch /flags/developer" and restart the unit.

If you wish to use the LeapPad Manager, connect your tablet to your PC. If this is your first time using the software, you may want to read through THIS thread for help getting started. Choose LeapPad->Connect in the app and wait for it to connect and load information in the app. Once that is done, choose Development Tools->Load Dev Mode

2. Now you will need to choose LeapPad->Disconnect and then power off the device and turn it back on

3. You should get a notification about the drivers being installed and if you click on it, it will show you the details.

4. Go to your start menu and start typing in "view network connections". When you see it in the list, click on it.

5. Find the one for the Leapfrog USB LAN Adapter in the list of connections

6. Right click on it and choose properties. Then find the Internet Protocol Version 4 in the list. Click on the name to select it and click the Properties button

7. Enter in an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask should auto populate when you click in the input box for it. Ensure it matches the picture and then click on and close out of the other windows.

Edit: Lately, I have had to restart the tablet in order for it to connect. If you have issues connecting, try to restart the device.

8. Download Filezilla if you do not already have it or if you already have an FTP client, then feel free to use that instead. Open it up and enter the host as 192.168.0.111 and username is root. There is no pass and the port should just default to 21.

9. Hit Quickconnect and it should connect to the tablet.

10. Do whatever you want and transfer any files you want to your PC, but remember if you mess around with files, you can stop your device from booting. When you are done, be sure to delete the developer flag so it will boot normal again when restarted.

The LeapPad Manager app will not work while in developer mode. I will not go into details about how to use FTP, you can search online if you need help.

Notes:

If you want to change the IP of the tablet, you can do so like this "ifconfig usb0 192.168.1.5 netmask 255.255.255.0 up" via the shell command line

Leap Pad Manager

This will walk you through creating custom videos and installing them to your Leap Pad. Themes are done in a similar method, but using the Theme Maker instead. If you wish to report bugs or features, you can post in here or on Bitbucket HERE

Download the Software HERE
Run the software and go to the LeapPad menu then Video Maker
Find a video you want to use on your PC and drag / drop it onto the software in step 1
Enter in the details you want and click the Convert Video button
While it is converting, you can do step 7 and edit the icons specified to reflect your video and save them with the same names overwriting the existing ones.
Once the video is done, click the Create App button and it will put all the files into a .tar file.
You can close the Video Creator app so you are back to the main LeapPad Manager app.
Connect your LeapPad to your PC and ensure the official Connect software is not running.
In the custom LeapPad Manager software, go to LeapPad / Connect and it should connect to your device and display some info in the log window
Simply drag / drop your video .tar file to the program to install it.

Please be aware that the app needs administrator privileges so it can scan the devices and find the LeapPad. You can right click on the device and choose run as administrator. In order to drag/drop to the app, you may need to adjust your UAC or disable it.

If you are still unable to connect to the device, you may need to disable the Leapfrog Connect Device Service and ensure you are not in developer mode.

If the videos do not play, you need to install the video player which you can find here http://www16.zippyshare.com/v/77880182/file.html

The latest software v1.8.0 has been uploaded and will auto check if you need the video player. It also has ffmpeg included. If I start running into bandwidth issues, it will be removed.

[Tutorial] - Getting shell access

What you need:

USB to UART (TTL) Cable module PL2303 Converter - UK - US
Drivers - HERE
Putty - HERE

Install the drivers for your converter cable.

Open the device and solder to the points shown or modify a game cart and solder some wires on to the points shown. This way you can simply plug in the cartridge and not have to open the device.

Can I make my own backgrounds?

Yes, grab the theme maker software from the downloads page. You can also grab any of the themes posted on here as well. Currently these themes only work on the LeapPad 2, Power and possibly LeapPad 1, but has not been tested.

Can I make my own videos?

After installing my custom video, it disappears.
This is because you either connected to the internet via USB or WIFI and the software detected the custom video and removed it for you. How nice of them. There is a URL you can block in your router to stop this from happening, but can't remember the URL right now. I will update this when I have time to research it further.

What size are the background themes?

272x480 for the Leap Pad 1 and 2. The Ultra uses a different theme format

How do I access the parent menu?

Push home and vol up at the same time

Is there a repair mode?

Leap Pad 2:
Power on the device while holding home, vol down and right on the directional pad. This will boot up to a repair mode where you can then connect it to a computer and attempt to restore the firmware

Leap Pad Ultra and 3:
Power on the device while holding home and right on the D-pad
